Q CLASH 1 – ASHCROFT MEDAL ANNOUNCED

With just over a week to go until the first Q Clash match at the Gabba, the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns have announced that Queensland AFL Legend, Marcus Ashcroft will be honoured with a medal named in his honour.

The Marcus Ashcroft Medal will be presented to the player adjudged best afield in Queensland Clash matches between the Gold Coast SUNS and the Brisbane Lions.

Ashcroft, Queensland’s AFL games record holder, said he was extremely proud to have the medal struck in his name.

“It’s a huge personal honour, I loved my time playing at Brisbane and was fortunate enough to be a member of a some great teams, but now I am really enjoying my time with the Gold Coast SUNS, to be involved in a fledgling club from the start, in the community I grew up is a fantastic opportunity,” Ashcroft said.

The former Brisbane Lions premiership player is currently the General Manager of Football Operations at the Gold Coast SUNS. Ashcroft spent four years in a football administration role with the Lions before joining Gold Coast SUNS in 2008.

Ashcroft joined the GC SUNS as an assistant coach but always had the football manager’s role in his sights.

A former player for the Southport Sharks, Ashcroft played 318 games for the Brisbane Lions including three premierships in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
He is the games record holder for the Brisbane Lions and is the first non-Victorian to have played 300 games in the AFL.
