McDonald’s South East Queensland Juniors Grand Final Weekend

This weekend will be a Grand Final bonanza in South East Queensland, with more than 1,600 kids playing for premiership glory across three days and three venues.

AFL Queensland will be overseeing 43 Grand Finals to be played at Leyshon Park (Yeronga), Metricon Stadium (Gold Coast) and Kawana Park Oval (Meridan Plains).

Twenty-two teams will have the opportunity to feel like a superstar, when they play at AFL venue and home of the Gold Coast SUNS, Metricon Stadium.

In total across the weekend 33 clubs will be represented across the weekend, including Tweed Coolangatta, Murwillumbah and Ballina. In 2021 border closures prevented these Northern Rivers clubs from competing in the McDonald’s South East Queensland Juniors competition. AFL Queensland are delighted to welcome them back in 2022.

All games will be livestreamed for free on AFL Queensland’s YouTube channel and admission is free at all venues.

Head of AFL Queensland Trisha Squires congratulated all participants.

“After celebrating a community football participation record earlier this year in Queensland, we are so looking forward to watching more than 1,600 kids in South East Queensland play in a Grand Final,” she said.

“On the Gold Coast, it will be so special for our youth to feel like a superstar, by playing at an official AFL venue, Metricon Stadium.”

Competitions Lead for South East Queensland Youth and Regional, Brad Howard, said all teams had been resilient during a challenging year.

“2022 continued to present a number of external challenges, yet participation numbers have continued to grow.  After increasing from 303 to 333 Youth teams in SEQ to 2021, those numbers grew again to 347 in 2022,” he said.

“On behalf of AFL Queensland I would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped get kids on the field each and every week and hope they enjoy the final weekend of the season before a well deserved break.”
