AFL Queensland will hold the inaugural State Under 18 Youth Girls State Championships at Yeronga AFC on the weekend of 15-17 July.

Teams from Brisbane/Sunshine Coast (Flames), Gold Coast/Northern Rivers/Darling Downs (Southern Stars), Mackay/Capricornia/Wide Bay (Central Coast Cobras) and Cairns/Townsville (North Queensland) will all feature in the carnival, to be played at the newly  refurbished AFLQ Training & Administration Centre.

“With the success of our Under 18 Youth Girls State teams over the past three or four years, the selection process has become more difficult due to the talent being spread out over the state,” said AFLQ Female Participation Coordinator Julia Price.

“The only fair way to select a State team was to bring all the contenders together in a championship play-off.

“To be selected for your region, girls don’t have to play for a club team. But we have found that since finding out about the pathway in AFL, girls are keen to play more football and are putting pressure on their local leagues to start a girls’ club competition,” she said.
