HUGHES HOLDS ON

Wednesday 4 August 2010

Southport’s Cleve Hughes has held his lead in the QAFL goalkicking race despite missing the last two and a half games through injury.

Hughes is still five goals in front of NT Thunder full-forward Darren Ewing after the Territorian added three goals against the Brisbane Lions last Saturday.

Hughes’ left ankle was still heavily strapped on Sunday as he watched the Sharks lose again without him, although he is expected to return within the next fortnight.

The Sharks play the winless Western Magpies at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday, before a huge battle with Mt Gravatt the following week, and the important spearhead is more likely to be set for the latter.

Tim Notting and Aaron Cornelius both made ground on the leaders although they are too far behind to catch them in three weeks.

Thunder star Cameron Ilett was the big mover of the weekend, his five goals against the Lions taking his tally to 31 for the season and on the brink of the top 10.
