Queensland today sent a no-nonsense message to the female football community Australia wide as the national championships got under way in Adelaide.

The Queensland girls, looking to improve on their third placing at the last  national carnival., beat South Australia 3-7 (25) to 2-7 (19).

They led the home side at every change in a tight defensive game played in 10 degrees.

According to reports from Adelaide, the half back line and midfield were outstanding for the Queenslander girls, whose victory should already be enough to keep them in division one for the next big championships.

Jade Pregelj from Logan was judged Queensland’s best player from Zillmere’s Sharni Webb, who was stretchered off in the last quarter after she landed heavily in a marking contest.

Emma Best from Morningside, Kate Lutkins from Yeronga South Brisbane, and Lauretta Dowling, from Centrals Trinity Beach in Cairns, were also named among Queensland’s best.

In other Round 1 games today, Victoria beat Western Australia 8-10 (58) to 4-2 (26),  Tasmania were too good for Northern Territory 12-7 (78) to 5-6 (36), and NSW beat ACT 8-7 (55) to 3-2 (20),

In Round 2 tomorrow (Wednesday) at Woodville, Queensland get a chance to further their standing against WA at 10.30am.
