EXCITING PRE-SEASON COMP FOR SEQ

Friday 11 February 2011

Queensland-based NEAFL clubs, those in the Pineapple Hotel Cup, and State Association teams will participate in ‘20/20’ carnivals for the Club Aid Cup next month.

The full days of 40-minute long matches at central venues will act not only as practice matches, but also raise much-needed funds for senior clubs affected by the Queensland floods.

All teams will pay a nomination fee to participate, every venue will pay for their hosting rights, gold coin donations will be asked of spectators, and umpires have donated their services free for the duration.

Every cent will go towards assisting those clubs worst affected by last month’s devastating floods to offset football related costs.

“It’s fantastic that the football family is working together in this way, and we should particularly commend Chris Guice and the umpires’ association for donating their time to this worthy cause,” said AFLQ operations manager Marty King.

All games will be played as 2 x 20 minute halves, with a seven-minute break for halftime.

The nine NEAFL clubs will be joined by two Brisbane Scorpions teams and two Gold Coast Scorpions sides in a competition played over two Saturdays, 12 and 19 March.

All four Scorpions teams will comprise a mix of Australia Post Queensland Scorpions Under 18 squad members and Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns Academy players.

Southport will host six games involved the Gold Coast-based clubs and Redland will host seven matches featuring the Brisbane-based teams on the opening day.

The Pineapple Hotel Cup sides are set to battle it out on Saturday 26 March, while the State Association Division 1 carnival is set for Wynnum and Kedron on 12 March, and Division 2 at Moorooka and Redcliffe on 5 March.

Each League will have its own Club Aid Cup to play for.

The team with the highest aggregate score will win the trophy in each, providing for plenty of attacking football.

All matches will be controlled under standard playing conditions, without the experimental rules being trialled at the higher AFL level.

The draw for the competitions will be released shortly.
