Former Broadbeach coach Denis Knight today was appointed senior coach of QAFL Gold Coast rival Labrador.

Knight, in charge of the Cats in 2006-07, will step into the big shoes of 2009-10 Tigers coach Jarrod Field, who surprised QAFL State League observers when he stood down for family reasons after taking them to the grand final.

In a media statement today, Labrador lauded the capture of Knight, a much-decorated player in Tasmania and the VFA/VFL.

“Denis has had an outstanding  and successful career as a player and as a coach and we believe that he is the perfect fit for our football club,” said club development manager Ryan Kogelman.

“He shares the same philosophies and beliefs as our football club in development, professionalism, attitude and values and we believe that will assist in our long term sustainability.”

Knight  was a standout player with South Launceston in the TFL, and with Dandenong and Springvale in the VFA/VFL and later Noble Park in the Eastern Football League, where he played in six premiership sides, coached two and was assistant-coach for a further two.

He also won six B&F awards, was named i Captain of the Springvale Team of the Century, and was chosen in the South Launceston Team of the Decade, the Dandenong Team of the Century and the VFL Team of the Decade. He has also coached at representative level.

In addition to his time at Broadbeach he was an assistant coach at Southport, which, according to Tiger officials, has given him an in-depth understanding of the competition, its players and opposition sides and the club and a very good start for next season.

“As a club we are very pleased and excited for the future and we welcome Denis on board as our new senior coach. The club will aim to have a meet and greet night shortly for all players, staff, sponsors and supporters to formally welcome Denis to the club,” said Kogelman.
