Country Stockmen take on AFL Cairns

The Country Stockmen held their final training run at Esplen oval in readiness for their clash against AFL Cairns this Sunday at Cazaly’s Stadium.

This is a much anticipated game between two strong regions that will ultimately form the Queensland Country Team to play in the Australian Country Championships in WAGGA later in July

The Stockmen has a strong regional flavour with over 7 players representing regional leagues from the Darling Downs  out to Mt Isa and through to Townsville.

Stockmen Coach Brett Maloney who led them to victory in 2010 at Coorparoo is confident his charges will match it with Cairns on their home deck.

”I am really happy with the way the squad has come together and appreciate the support of all the SEQAFL Div 1 clubs who have allowed their players to participate in this game,” said Maloney.

“To play Cairns at a quality venue is a great experience for the players and they are looking forward to the challenge but our group is up to it.”

James Rozynski, Angus Munro and ruckmen Michael I’Anson who played in the game 2 years ago are back whilst the inclusion of former NEAFL players in Steve Brittain, Matthew Trewella and Ben Heffernan-Roper will add some class to the overall team.

Palm Beach Currumbin brothers Ryan & Brad Hards along with Adam Eady will add plenty starch to the midfield.

Three time Holman Medallist Brendan Iles from Warwick gets his chance along with Tom Rudolph from Coolaroo in Toowoomba a former State U18.

Queensland Country Team Manager Jack Barry said these programs are for players like that who for family, lifestyle or work commitments choose to stay and live in the country and are not disadvantaged.

“They get a great opportunity to put their best foot forward showcase their skill and possibly gain Queensland Country selection, in a national carnival. I think it’s a credit to everyone involved that this program is catered for the country players from Gold Coast through to Cairns,” said Barry.

The AFL Cairns Vs Country Stockmen game commences 2:00pm Sunday at Cairns’ Cazaly’s Stadium.
