Caloundra’s got Sauce

The Caloundra Panthers have pulled off a major coup with the signing of former Brisbane Lions defender Daniel Merrett.

Merrett will play the majority of games for the Panthers this season and is set to trouble opposition sides with his 195cm, 103kg frame.

The big-bodied defender only recently retired from playing at the highest level at the end of 2016, so should be a force in the Division 1 Hart Sport Cup.

While the club will be excited about his on field contributions, Merrett also brings a wealth of experience off the field.

The ex-Lion will no doubt call on his time as the backline coach of the Lions AFLW team, to mentor the younger players, help with structures and support the coaching staff.

Merrett was identified and fast tracked through AFLQ’s Talent Search program, then represented Queensland at under 18 level, so it’s a nice full circle for the tough defender to return to Queensland community football.

The 200 game Brisbane Lions player, originally drafted as a forward with pick 30 in the 2002 national draft, is eligible to play his first game against the University of Queensland on the 20th of May.

Lions young gun and Caloundra export Eric Hipwood presented Merrett with his Panthers jumper.
