WILSTON GRANGE v ASPLEY

Live with commentary on YouTube

Head-to-Head: Played 7 – Aspley won 5; Wilston Grange won 2
Head-to-Head at iiNergy Oval: Played 3 – Aspley won 2; Wilston Grange won 1
Last time they met: 28 May 2022 – Aspley 10.8 (68) d Wilston Grange 3.2 (20) at Zupps Aspley Oval

Wilston Grange, on its first three-win streak since 2018/19, will host Aspley, on its longest ever winning streak, on Saturday morning in the most in-form Northside Derby in the Bond University QAFLW for nine years.

Not since Grange hosted Zillmere in Round 14 of 2014 have two north Brisbane sides met in the QAFLW while both were in the top 4. The Gorillas will be hoping for a better result than the 71-point drubbing they received that day courtesy of four goals from a 17-year-old Tayla Harris.

Injuries to Charlize Anderson and Grace O’Donnell in the win over Yeronga allow Georgina Ott into the top grade for the first time in 2023 and a QAFLW debut for defender and local junior Caitlin Gunn. Zimra Hussain also returns to the side after completing her Lions Academy commitments.

The Hornets have made five changes to the side that was already in control of its match against Coorparoo before finishing with four goals in seven minutes. Four of them (Kotatis, van de Wiel, Vetter and Williams) return to the team having been regular starters for Aspley this year, while Rania Crozier takes a break from her busy schedule of making every representative team in Australia to play just her second QAFLW game of the season.

The early start for this fixture is further evidence of the massive cultural change at Hickey Park. In 2022, Wilston Grange’s Ladies Day officially ended 15 minutes before the QAFLW match began. In 2023, the women’s matches will be held early (credit to Aspley for agreeing to Wilston Grange’s request) so that the players can be a full part of a revamped Ladies Day.

COORPAROO v MAROOCHYDORE
Saturday 10 June 2023, 3pm at Giffin Park, Coorparoo

Head-to-Head: Played 15 – Coorparoo won 9; Maroochydore won 6
Head-to-Head at Giffin Park: Played 7 – Coorparoo won 6; Maroochydore won 1
Last time they met: 18 June 2022 – Maroochydore 11.11 (77) d Coorparoo 2.2 (14) at Domino’s Oval

Coorparoo will look to revive its Bond University QAFLW season when Maroochydore visits the Castle on Saturday afternoon.

After three straight losses, the Kings may be relieved to know that the last seven ‘Coorp-maroo-chydore’ matches have been won by the home team. Indeed, this Saturday’s game will be the first of four home games in five rounds for the Kings and the first of three matches against teams ranked lower than them on the ladder, suggesting that the current six-point gap to the top four is surmountable.

The Roos have lost their last four matches but have the same number of wins as the Kings and deserve to be encouraged by their ability to finish games well as shown by late comebacks against Wilston Grange and Bond Uni.

Coorparoo’s seven changes include five players returning from Academy playing and coaching duties. Jo Miller returns from injury for her first QAFLW appearance of 2023 after spending the summer with St Mary’s in the Northern Territory league.

Maroochydore also welcome back three Lions Academics including Sophie Peters who will sneak in her first QAFLW match this year before representing Australia next week.

YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE v SOUTHPORT

Saturday 10 June 2023, 4:45pm at Leyshon Park, Yeronga

Head-to-Head: Played 2 – Southport won 2
Head-to-Head at Leyshon Park: Played 2 – Southport won 2
Last time they met: 1 June 2022 – Southport 11.10 (76) d Yeronga SB 0.2 (2) at Leyshon Park

The breadth of the Bond University QAFLW will be on show at Leyshon Park on Saturday evening when bottom-placed Yeronga hosts ladder-leaders Southport.

Both matches between these sides in 2022 were played at Leyshon Park after the fixture at Fankhauser was rained out and Southport agreed to play its catch-up home game at Yeronga on a Wednesday night. That match was notable for a five-goal QAFLW debut by Darcie Davies largely created by the ball-winning of Maddy Watt.

Lisa Milne has made seven changes to the Devils side, bringing in the size and strength of forward Sophie Dunne and midfielders Farradai Hopkins and Taylah Welch.

The loss of speedster Jamie Howell is somewhat offset by the return of Georgia Hewett, while Courtney McDonnell returns to the side after being a last-minute withdrawal from the Round 8 team.

Selina Priest returns from Academy coaching duties and has been named at centre half-forward, although Peter Doherty will have the option of starting her back thanks to the inclusion of talls Avalon Pearce and Alessia Smythe (2022 Reserve Grade Best on Ground) for the first time in 2023.

Saturday’s match will be Southport’s 25th in the Bond University QAFLW. With 18 wins, 6 losses and one match abandoned before half-time, their winning percentage of 75 is ahead of current sides Bond University (67.9%), Coorparoo (64.6%), and Yeronga (64%).

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND v BOND UNIVERSITY

Head-to-Head at Base Architecture Meadows: Played 4 – Bond University won 2; University of Queensland won 1; Drawn 1
Last time they met: 23 July 2022 (Semi Final) – University of Queensland 7.6 (48) d Bond University 1.3 (9) at Base Architecture Meadows

Saturday night at St Lucia sees the first U-Clash of the 2023 Bond University QAFLW with both sides featuring a posse of prodigies.

While neither varsity can call on the plethora of established AFLW players that highlighted not only the 2021 Grand Final but most of the classic matches across the 2021 and 2022 seasons, the brief availability of the Academy players before the Queensland representative season begins comes at the right time to provide reels of potential ‘before they were famous’ footage.

Four Lion cubs return for the Red Lionesses: Erin Gilbert slots into defence; Ashleigh Moyle and Laura Roy will start on the bench for their first QAFLW matches since Round 1; and forward Brooke Sheridan has 7 goals in 5 matches, including 3 for the Lions against Murray Bushrangers, since returning from injury in early May.

The Bull Sharks have named six Suns rays in their 21 with three more on the emergency list. Kiara Bischa and Mia Salisbury join their captain in the halfback line; Josie McCabe and Tara Harrington will flank the in-form Bella Iverach in the half-forward line; Ella Calleja partners Round 8’s Impact Player of the Round Jasmyn Davidson up front; and Ava Usher finds herself as the second most-experienced member of the on-ball quartet.

Bond’s last win over UQ was in Round 7 of 2021. Four of those named in their Best Players list that day went on to play AFLW: Giselle Davies; Shannon Danckert; Mikayla Pauga; and Lulu Pullar.
