Bond University QAFLW Teams – Round 3

SOUTHPORT v ASPLEY
Saturday 29 April 2023, 3:00pm
Fankhauser Reserve, Southport
Streamed live on YouTube

Head-to-head: Played 1* – Southport won 1
Last time they met: Southport 14.8 (92) d Aspley 5.2 (32) at Veracity Oval, Palm Beach
* One match abandoned

Southport produced their highest score in the Bond University QAFLW in Round 1; Aspley did the same in Round 2. It’s fair to say that attack characterised by support play and handballing is on the menu at Fankhauser Reserve in Round 3.

The Sharks change two of their forward line with Faith Alchin and Georja Davies, scorers of a collective five goals against Grange, making way for two-time QFAW premiership captain Hannah Davies to return from injury and Kialla-Skye Bailey of the Suns Academy to debut.

Aspley, who trailed 0-9 to Yeronga two minutes before quarter-time last week before scoring 93 of the next 94 points, look very settled with the only change being the inclusion of co-captain Ange Lingard for the first time in 2023.

YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE v MAROOCHYDORE

Head-to-head at Leyshon Park: Played 4 – Yeronga SB won 2; Maroochydore won 1; Drawn 1
Last time they met: 4 June 2022 – Maroochydore 6.12 (48) d Yeronga SB 2.2 (14) at Leyshon Park

Yeronga has had territorial dominance for large parts of their first two matches for little reward. Maroochydore had almost no territorial dominance last week but managed to grind out a win.

Lisa Milne has made four changes to the Devils. These include a first appearance of 2023 for Georgia Carmody, and a debut to Crystal Browne from Darwin Buffaloes in the NTFLW and a premiership winner with Eastside Blues in the Big Rivers League around Katherine.

The Roos include a premiership winner of their own with Cairns Saints’ five-goal Grand Final hero Grace Perry making her first appearance in green and gold on the same day that her Saints teammate Andria Heard debuts for Bond (see below). Additionally, Lilly Logan and Arden Quilliam become the latest women to graduate to seniors from Maroochydore’s junior program.

Maroochydore has won the last four matches between these sides in the Bond University QAFLW.

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND v COORPAROO
Saturday 29 April 2023, 4:45pm
Base Architecture Meadows, St Lucia

Head-to-head: Played 21 – Coorparoo won 17; University of Queensland won 4
Head-to-head at Base Architecture Meadows: Played 8 – Coorparoo won 7; University of Queensland won 1.
Last time they met: 11 June 2022 – University of Queensland 5.6 (36) d Coorparoo 4.1 (25) at Giffin Park

Two clubs that have won six of the last ten Bond University QAFLW premierships will each seek their first victory of the year when they clash at the newly named Base Architecture Meadows (aka St Lucia No. 2 Oval).

Ross Clayfield makes three changes to his side after the Red Lionesses’ quest to turn inside 50 dominances into points against Maroochydore last week was literally blown off course. A horrible injury to Madi Wells enables the return of Eva Sartor who impressed on debut in Round 1. Ella Reddaway is also back in top grade while Wests junior and Lions Academy player Edie McCabe dons the cerulean sash for the first time.

Ruck Emily Robinson will debut for the Kings following a strong 2022 season with Sherwood in the QFAW and a Best on Ground performance in last Tuesday’s massive upset win in Reserve Grade over Bond University. Coorparoo crowd favourite and Australian futsal representative JJ McLean returns to the top grade looking to add to her career tally of 20 goals in the Bond University QAFLW.

UQ won the most recent match between these sides after Coorparoo won the previous 10.

WILSTON GRANGE v BOND UNIVERSITY
Saturday 29 April 2023, 4:45pm
iiNergy Oval, Stafford

Head-to-head: Played 10 – Bond University won 7; Wilston Grange won 3
Head-to-head at iiNergy Oval: Played 5 – Bond University won 3; Wilston Grange won 2
Last time they met: 11 June 2022 – Bond University 8.14 (62) d Wilston Grange 2.1 (13) at iiNergy Oval

Bond University is about to find out how well they deal with a four-day turnaround after a bruising Anzac Day clash with Coorparoo. Wilston Grange couldn’t breach the Southport defence last Saturday but did hold the Sharks at bay for long periods of the match.

The Gorillas will play the first of five home games in six rounds with a huge injection of experience. Kylie Welsh (aka Rabbit), Megan Boscoe and Tarin Moke have a combined 203 Bond University QAFLW matches between them (not including Reserve Grade games) and provide options in all three lines.

Cairns Saints Grand Final winner Andria Heard makes her Bull Sharks debut, as does Skye White who was a late withdrawal from the Anzac Day match. Forward Lily Tarlinton will captain Bond Uni for the first time after Paris Lightfoot suffered a black eye on Tuesday against Coorparoo. Her withdrawal ensures that only Wilston Grange will play with a Shiner.

Wilston Grange won the first three matches between these sides before Bond University began its current run of seven wins.
