Head-to-head at Domino’s Oval: Played 7 – UQ won 5, Maroochydore won 2
Last time they met: 15 June 2022 – Maroochydore 4.7 (31) d UQ 4.4 (28) at Moreton Bay Central

Two of the recent powerhouses of the Bond University QAFLW endured horrible off-seasons which played a large role in each of them conceding 100 points last week. This week provides both with an opportunity to get a proper sense of their place in the new pecking order.

Roos captain Kelsee Sills has overcome an injury scare in the first quarter against Bond to line up at fullback, Alyssa Armstrong moves off the bench to ensure no loss of pace with the absence of Amber Swan, and Brooke Day returns to begin her third season in the QAFLW. Senior debuts are awarded to former Noosa and Maroochydore junior Poppy Tindal, ex-Kawana Park junior Zara Hurley, and local product Tara Muir.

Mia Teubler missed the entire 2022 season with a shoulder injury after finishing fourth in the 2021 Emma Zielke Medal. Better known as a ruck, Teubler has been named on the wing and may be seen more in the midfield this year.

A trio of McDebutants step into the Red Lionesses side: Lucy McCormick from McMorningside; Jindalee McJunior Kate McKenna; and multi-sport athlete Georgia McMullen from McHobart.

SOUTHPORT v WILSTON GRANGE

Fankhauser Reserve, Southport

Head-to-head: Played 2 – Southport won 2
Head-to-head at Fankhauser Reserve: Played 1 – Southport won 1
Last time they met: 4 June 2022 – Southport 12.9 (81) d Wilston Grange 0.2 (2) at Fankhauser Reserve

Southport began the season with a huge win against a team that lost most of its 2022 squad; this week they face a Gorillas team that gained half a squad and is full of confidence after breaking its 14-match losing streak.

Georja becomes the fourth and final Davies sister to play for Southport in the Bond University QAFLW, while Faith Alchin’s hat-trick of goals in Reserve Grade sees her returns to the state league following two seasons with Coolangatta in 2020 and 2021.

Utility Carly Remmos, who followed up last week’s midfield masterclass against UQ with a 40-minute drive and a team-high 8 rebounds in the North Gold Coast Seahawks 1-point win over the Pirates in the NBL1 North competition, will this week have only a 15-minute drive from playing Grange at Fankhauser to the Cairns Dolphins at Runaway Bay Stadium.

The Gorillas have multisport stars of their own with former netballer Eloise Ayre and former ‘leaguie’ Ash Moloney making their first appearances in 2023. Grace O’Donnell has been rewarded for an impressive showing in Reserve Grade last week with her ninth top grade appearance.

Head-to-head at Zupps Aspley Oval: Played 3 – Yeronga SB won 2; Aspley won 1
Last time they met: 11 June 2022 – Aspley 5.5 (35) d Yeronga SB 4.7 (31) at Zupps Aspley Oval

Both Aspley and Yeronga will be looking for greater accuracy at Zupps Aspley Oval after they each had more scoring shots than their opponents in Round 1 without claiming victory.

With the Hornets’ armada of Academy players unavailable, they have given club debuts to three players with Bond University QAFLW experience. Premiership defender Ella Desrettes will begin on the pine; Jaida Tabb, originally from Moonta in South Australia’s Spencer Gulf, faces her former club; and Holly Mirfield, whose last state league match was for Coolangatta in the 2020 Grand Final, joins the forward line.

The Devils welcome back 2020 Grand Final winner Kara Stock after a year’s absence, and also reward former Mount Gravatt junior with a starting midfield berth after excelling in the Reserve Grade win over Wilston Grange.

BOND UNIVERSITY v COORPAROO
Tuesday 25 April 2023, 2:20pm
Bond University Oval, Robina
Streamed live on YouTube

Head-to-head: Played 11 – Bond University won 8; Coorparoo won 3
Head-to-head at Bond University Oval: Played 5 – Bond University won 4; Coorparoo won 1
Last time they met: 4 June 2022 – Bond University 7.5 (47) d Coorparoo 2.1 (13) at Giffin Park

Congratulations to Coorparoo, specifically coach Rebecca Randazzo, for proposing this Anzac Day fixture and to Bond University for accepting the offer and hosting the match. The Kings will be wearing bespoke jerseys for what is hoped will become an annual tradition in the Bond University QAFLW.

Bond University have had to ring the changes this week with the unavailability of Academy and Winter Series players, although they retain their two best players from the win over Maroochydore, Shannon Nolan and Tara Harrington. 2022 Club Champion Courtney Sexton makes her first appearance of the season; the other six inclusions are all Burleigh juniors with Lexi Samuels and Jasmine Single having debuted last year.

The first ruck opponent Skye White will face in the state league is 73-Test England netball international Stacey Francis, who will represent Coorparoo outside of Queensland Firebirds commitments.

Coorparoo has included 2018 Leading Goalkicker Jenae Govan at full forward, and Emma Zielke, whose achievements exceed my permitted word limit, at centre half-forward. Given that the Bullsharks have Leah Kaslar at fullback, the possibility of regular contests between two undisputed greats of Queensland women’s Aussie Rules would alone make this match unmissable.
