BITS Saints continued their dominance in the AFL Capricornia men’s competitions on Saturday afternoon, winning the 2013 A-grade and reserve grade premierships.
The Saints defeated Glenmore Bulls 12.7 (79) to 5.7 (37) in A-grade to end the North Rockhampton-based club’s hopes of breaking their 23-year A-grade premiership drought.
The dominance of the classy Saints, who are based at Boyne Island Tannum Sands, wasn’t confined to A-grade with BITS defeating Gladstone Mudcrabs 13.10 (88) to 6.9 (45) in the reserve grade grand final.
Led by man of the match Jamie Cunninghame, the minor premiers led from start to finish in the A-grade match against a youthful Bulls outfit which will certainly be better for the experience.
The Bulls showed glimpses of what to expect in 2014, but struggled to contain the bigger, stronger and vastly more experienced BITS side, with the competition’s leading goal-scorer Luke O’Shea adding three more goals to his season’s tally.
With Glenmore trailing 8.1 (49) to 1.5 (11) at half-time, Bulls fans did have something to cheer about when the local boys booted three goals in the final period to close the gap.
Glenmore captain Tyson Payne led from the front, while Brandon Chadwick and Nick Payne were among their best.
