AFL Queensland seeking expressions of interest for senior women’s football teams for 2020 season

AFL Queensland is now fielding expressions of interest applications for clubs wishing to introduce a senior women’s football team for the 2020 season.

Senior women’s football continues to be a growing frontier across Queensland with female participation reaching record highs in 2019.

Across the state, 39.9 per cent of all highly engaged participants are female and in senior football, the longstanding interest has seen more and more teams joining the various QAFLW and QFAW competitions.

In total, 42 teams are currently competing in South East Queensland senior women’s football competitions across five competitions.

That figure represents a five-team increase from last season and a 12-team increase since the 2017 season.

AFL Queensland Women’s Competition Manager Joanna Main said the popularity of women’s football has continued to grow and expects more clubs to express their interest in fielding a team next year.

“With an increase in female youth participation we continue to see a steady increase in the senior space as the girls age out and look to join senior football clubs.”

“It is really an exciting time for female football in Queensland.  With the introduction of the Gold Coast SUNS in the AFLW for 2020 I would expect that we will continue to grow exponentially in the female space for at least the next few years.”

To be considered for a team in 2020, clubs must return the attached EOI form to Joanna.main@afl.com.au by June 30, 2019.

The process for a team’s nomination is also attached for clubs’ perusal.

Clubs that apply will be contacted by Joanna once all expressions of interest have been submitted (June 30 deadline) to determine a suitable date for the them to present on the six core pillars.
