AFL Queensland announces new opportunity with Volunteering Queensland

AFL Queensland has established a new relationship with Volunteering Queensland in 2024, which will provide the opportunity for individuals to volunteer with AFL Queensland.

If eligible, they may also be able to gain an Active Volunteering Certificate through their work with AFL Queensland.

Participants can choose between umpiring, coaching, club volunteering, game development, administrative support or through the Women and Girls space.

Richie Lyons, AFL Queensland’s Growth, Participation and Operations Manager said AFL Queensland is excited to be involved with such a respected organisation.

“Volunteering Queensland do outstanding work in the community, and we are so pleased to be a member with them in 2024,” he said.

“There are many roles and avenues to be part of our community that don’t involve playing, including administration, umpiring, and coaching.

“If you are keen to be involved in our fantastic culture, we will find a position that suits you.”

Sam Bridges, AFL Queensland’s Umpiring Development Lead said this association was a new avenue to encourage more people to give umpiring a go.

“With the growth of AFL participation in Queensland booming, we are constantly on the hunt for more umpires in our communities across Queensland,” he said.

“By becoming involved with Volunteering Queensland, our fantastic program will be exposed to a new audience.

“Umpiring is a fantastic way to keep fit, meet new people, all while making a difference in our great game.

“We encourage anyone interested to give the team in green a go.”

Jackie Choquenot, Volunteering Queensland’s Training Partnerships Manager said the new partnership is a unique opportunity.

“Volunteering Queensland’s collaboration with AFLQ Umpiring offers our students an opportunity to fulfill their volunteer placement requirements as part of the Accredited Active Volunteering courses,” she said.

“Through this collaboration, we’re not only nurturing a passion for sports officiating but also instilling a sense of community engagement and responsibility.”
