AFL 9s to headline at Northern Uni Games

After an exciting rookie year in 2013, AFL 9s will be looking to back up its performance this year on the Sunshine Coast as part of the 2014 Northern University Games (NUG).

The NUG are for university and TAFE students from Queensland, Northern Territory and northern New South Wales and will take place on the Sunshine Coast between July 7 and 10.

AFL Queensland Participation Programs Coordinator Marc Seen said he was thrilled by the news.

“Last year was a bit of a test for us but the event was a massive hit,” he said.

“We had six mixed teams and a pretty good standard of footy.”

“The Uni Games isn’t just about playing sport. There is also a big focus on the social events that are held each night, so all of the students get a chance to have some fun and relax during their holidays.”

AFL 9s is the AFL’s official alternative version of the game which has been developed so everyone can have a go at playing AFL.

AFL 9s format is easier to play, less physically demanding and offers a game where participation and fun are a priority.

How is AFL9s played?

• The game is played between two teams of nine (9) with interchange players.

• The field has a maximum length of 100 metres (which can be modified depending on the age and ability level of participants) and is divided into three zones, a mid-zone and two scoring zones.

• If an individual is touched then it is an automatic turn-over.

• Teams score by kicking the football into their attacking scoring zone to designated forwards who are the only players permitted to score. A mark is awarded irrespective of the distance the ball has travelled and if the ball hits the ground it is an automatic turnover.
