Ballina Bombers Football Club has been a part of AFL Queensland’s landscape since 1984, but with worryingly low numbers heading into season 2013, players are needed to save the club.
The Bombers laid-back and family-friendly atmosphere normally draws in many keen footballers, however, rain and work commitments have seen numbers dwindle this year.
Ballina president Jason Ross said that the club is an ideal place for people of all ages and backgrounds to come and have a kick and – most importantly – have fun.
“We are a club that doesn’t discriminate; all participants, young or old, having a crack and no matter what the result, we get together after the game and have a beer or soft drink,” said Ross.
“We don’t encourage foul behaviour or anything of that sort, just a bunch of blokes looking to have a good time, playing the game we love and meeting new people and their families while we are at it.”
Despite the club’s laidback attitude they have seen much success during their time in the Summerland League, winning premierships in 1995, 1996 and 2005; and just missing out on the finals last year.
No one is more proud of the club’s rich history then Ballina Bombers co-founder and life member John Woods, who despite fighting cancer, can’t stop thinking about the club and what might happen if it doesn’t get enough players.
“It would be absolutely devastating to see the club fold,” said Woods.
“Too many people have put in too much time to see it all disappear
“I remember when I had to park my bus with its lights on at the oval just so we could train at night.
“The club is now home to the best ground in the area, with new lights and coaches boxes and I can’t see why players wouldn’t want to participate and play in such a great environment.”
The football club is currently training every Tuesday and Thursday at their home ground, Fripp Oval, with most players hanging around to socialise over dinner.
