STATE ASSOC DIV 1 TEAM OF THE YEAR

“Coorparoo has dominated selections in the State Association team of the year following their victorious 2011 season. The coaching staff from each club were asked to select five players from the competition, with these votes then being tallied to select the honorary side.

Former Fitzroy and Brisbane defender Michael Gibson was named coach of the year after guiding the Kings to an emphatic win against the UQ Red Lions in the Grand Final. Gibson first tasted victory with Coorparoo in 1984 as a player before leaving to join Fitzroy in the then VFL. Ben Gibson, Michael’s son, also made the team of the year after another stellar season at centre half back.

The Kings had four players in this year’s team, the most of any side in the competition. Grand Finalists UQ had three, as did the Caloundra Panthers, with Wynnum (two), Yeronga (two), Robina (two), Kenmore (two), Alex Hills (two), Aspley (one) and Kedron (one) sharing the remaining positions.

League medallist Dan Duffield was named Captain of the side, with only playmaker Matt Lockyer, goal sneak Dylan Wearmouth, ruckman Shaun Clarke, ball magnet Scott Gillett and centre half forward Tim Plummer remaining from last year’s team.
