Corinda State High School have claimed back-to-back division three titles in the Jonathan Brown Cup with an epic win over Centenary State High at  Yeronga.

In the first inter-school football played at the new headquarters of AFL Queensland, Corinda (pictured) triumphed 9-6 (60) to Centenary’s 9-5 (59) in a fitting finale to a competition sponsored by Quest Community Newspapers.

It was a win for caretaker Corinda coach James Rowe, who deputized for regular coach Ken McGuire, who was committed elsewhere.

And it came in a game of two halves.

Corinda led 7-1 to 3-3 at halftime after Jack Fox, a regular top-up player with the Brisbane Lions Reserves, played a starring role as his side capitalized on a string of errors from Centenary.

But, in a stunning turnaround, Centenary, inspired by best afield Tim Peck, held Corinda goalless in the third quarter and took a one-point lead to the final change.

It was end to end stuff in a gripping final stanza before a behind to Corinda about two minutes from full-time proved the winning score.

Peck took some consolation from his side’s loss as he was named best afield, but Fox, the Corinda captain pictured with injured Lions ruckman Jamie Charman, had the joy of holding aloft the Brisbane Lions Cup.

In the Division Two grand final, Benowa State High completed a 2009-10-11 hat-trick when they beat 2008 champions Wavell State High 11-13 (79) to 3-0 (18).

It was close enough in the first half, with Benowa up 4-7 to 2-0 at halftime, but the Gold Coasters ran away with it after the break,.

Benowa’s Brody Haberfield, a brother of former Gold Coast Suns trialist and himself a top-up player earlier this season with the Suns Reseves, was best afield.
