Brown put his hand up
Final quarter, TAC Cup, Queensland vs. Gippsland, goal for goal, anyone’s game. When Queensland needed someone to keep them in it, Gladstone’s Josh Brown stood up. He booted four for the game in a dominant display up forward to give Queensland every chance of causing a boil-over. Although they were beaten with the final kick of the day, Brown showed he belongs on the big stage.
One point thriller
The brand new, state of the art, 500lux lights at the Moreton Bay Sports Complex weren’t the only things heating up on Saturday night. Moreton Bay and Maroochydore were given the honour of being part of the first night game at the ground, and it was an absolute belter. Daniel Dzufer was the hero for Maroochydore. His goal at the 28-minute mark of the last squared things up, but that wasn’t his most important kick of the day. With just 20 seconds to go, he kicked one of the most important behinds of his life to break the deadlock, and hand the Roos the win. Maroochydore banked another four points as their season rolls on, but the Lions proved they are certainly on the right track.
Seven of the best for Zielks
Emma Zielke, pick seven in last months AFL women’s draft, has given herself the best possible lead in to next weekend’s AFL women’s exhibition match after booting seven goals in Coorparoo’s big win on the weekend. She will line up for the Western Bulldogs when they take on Melbourne at the MCG on May 24.
Skinny and Frase potent
Anyone still doubting the impact Matthew Lappin and Josh Fraser will have on the QAFL despite being part timers should think again. They combined for nine majors in Labradors big win over Broadbeach on Sunday, taking their combined season tally to 17 goals in just the two games. While the Tigers are a formidable side right across the park, opposition teams will have to lock down on these two when they go forward.
All-Australian Law
Shaleise Law’s AFL Youth Girls Nationals ended very abruptly on day two when she suffered a concussion in Queensland’s win over Western Australia. Despite just playing the two games, she was selected in the All-Australian team alongside four other Queenslanders, proving just how influential she is. Law was a huge loss to the Queensland team, and who knows, if she was out there running around in the grand final, she could have been the difference. At just 17 years old, she will get her chance at redemption next year.
