The Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast SUNS Academy female squads take to the field this weekend in the Under 18 Northern States Academy Series to be played at Coffs Harbour.
The carnival sees the SUNS, Lions, Sydney Swans and GWS play three matches each over three days.
AFL Queensland Female High Performance Manager Craig Starcevich said it’s an important weekend for players.
“This is the last opportunity for SUNS and Lions Academy players to press for Queensland selection before Round 1 of the Under 18 National Champs on May 19,” said Starcevich.
“The Queensland academies have played each twice in February and now have an opportunity to play against best talent from the Swans and Giants Academies.”
The AFL has dangled another carrot for prospective AFL Women’s draftees, announcing changes that will provide more playing opportunities.
“With AFL Women’s list sizes moving from 27 players to 30 for 2018, more positions will be available for Queensland players to join the Brisbane Lions or other AFLW teams,” said Starcevich.
