Community Footy Awards Wrap

Moreton Bay’s Jonathan Giles and Caloundra’s Thomas Rudolph were named as joint winners of the Duncanson Medal as best and fairest for the QFA North competition with 17 votes, joining a long list of winners at the 2016 Queensland Football Awards at the Gabba tonight.

Giles was the grunt man in the middle for Moreton Bay this year. His big body made him a contested ball machine, the catalyst to Moreton Bay’s midfield work.

Rudolph’s biggest asset in 2016 has been his ability to not only win his own footy, but put it on the scoreboard.

The Panthers’ livewire kicked 27 goals in the 2016 home and away season, while being named in his team’s best seven times.

They both finished one vote ahead of Noosa’s Nicholas Hill on 16 votes.

Robina’s Boeh Davies took out the Todd medal as the QFA South best and fairest with 26 votes.

Davies was sublime for Robina this year, especially early. After five rounds, he was already on eight votes.
The Roos’ midfielder finished three votes ahead of Burleigh’s Jackson Powell, who completed the season on 23 votes.

It’s Davies second league best and fairest award in Queensland, after taking out the SEQAFL Division Two top honour in 2013.

Maroochydore’s Jemma Abbott claimed QWAFA best and fairest on 22 votes.

Abbott, who is just 17 years old, was also a member of the Queensland Youth Girls Academy this year, is a ball magnet, and very strong overhead for her size.

She finished five votes ahead of Jindalee’s Kate Williams, on 17 votes, and six ahead of reining best and fairest winner, Mimi Hoger, from Zillmere.

The night wasn’t all about the players though, with acknowledgement of coaches and volunteers’ contribution to the game.

Coach of the Year awards went to Coorparoo’s Rory Lake (QFA), South East Suns’ David Sloan (QAFA), and Maroochydore’s Paul Meehan (Colts).

Shane Jurgens from University Hawks in Townsville was named AFL Queensland Volunteer of the Year, and the Community Umpire of the Year award went to Brad Wooding

The Queensland Football Awards celebrate the achievement of the players, officials and volunteers in the Queensland Football Association (South and North), Queensland Amateur A and B (Sunshine Coast, Central, Northern Rivers), Queensland Women’s Amateur Football Association, and Colts competitions.
