Tuesday Talking Points

Surfs up

Imagine heading down to the Gold Coast for a surf, paddling out, looking around, and seeing three-time world surfing champ Mick Fanning next to you. No it wasn’t a dream; it was reality for Wilston Grange’s Fletcher McIvor and Frazer Eaton, Aspley’s Mitch McKee, and SUNS employee (and former Gorilla) Matt Nickerson over the weekend. The only thing we are disappointed with was the lack of shakas in the photo.

Talent on show
Sunday was Queensland’s turn in the AFL Female Talent Search roadshow, and it certainly delivered. Nearly 50 athletes arrived at Chruchie  for a morning of combine testing and an afternoon with the pink footy in hand. There was some serious potential on show, but the biggest standout in an extremely talented bunch would have been Courtney Hill who spent her summer with the Brisbane Heat in the WBBL; definitely one to watch when she pulls on the boots this year.

Lion legend in Tiger territory

On Thursday night, the Mayne Tigers had a new, but very recognisable voice directing traffic at training; none other than Brisbane Lions legend Simon Black. The Lions midfield coach put the Tigers through a full skills session as they ramp up their quest for back-to-back-to-back premierships.

QAFL step up

It looks like a couple of the QAFLers from last season will be taking the next step in their careers this year by having a crack at the NEAFL. Declan Bevan and Bradie Foster from Wilston Grange are currently running around with Aspley, while James O’Donnell got a late call up to Redland to help out in the ruck last week. It will be interesting to see the balance of games they play between the QAFL and NEAFL this year.

Junior sign on day

Results are in from the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast Juniors’ sign on day, and the numbers are green green green.  Registrations for the two leagues are up five per cent in comparison to this time last year, with online registrations still coming in. Gold Coast Juniors will hold their sign on day this Saturday at Metricon Stadium, in conjunction with the Gold Coast SUNS open day from 8am to 12:30pm.
