11 Academy players in the mix for draft bid

The Queensland AFL clubs have nominated 11 eligible Academy players as potential bid selections for this year’s draft.

The Queensland AFL clubs have nominated 11 eligible Academy players as potential bid selections for this year’s draft.

Brisbane nominated nine players (Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds, Isaac Conway, Jonathon Freeman, Sam Gribble, Nick Jackson Lewis Radford, Aden Rutledge, Archie Smith, Cain Tickner,) while the SUNS (Jarred Ellis and Caleb Hay) nominated two.

The two Queensland clubs now have priority to these Academy players, similarly to clubs with father/son selections.

While they do have the first rights to these talented youngsters, if an opposition club shows interest they may place a bid a high draft-pick on a player, forcing the Academy clubs to raise their bids.

The Father/Son and Academy Bidding meeting takes place on October 7, with clubs to finalise their nominations by Friday, October 4.

This is the first year that a bidding system has been in place for both the Lions and SUNS Academies, with the Gold Coast having exclusive access to their Academy players until the 2012 draft.

Gold Coast used a zone selection to draft Clay Cameron with pick #58 in the 2012 national draft.

The SUNS join Brisbane and Sydney in the new bidding process, while GWS retains exclusive rights on their Academy players until the end of the year.

A total of 28 players were nominated by the four clubs as potential Academy selections for the 2013 draft, to be held on November 21.
