It all comes down to this! We’re at the pointy end of the biggest ever StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup.
This weekend will see six teams crowned Queensland state champions after the 10 month competition draws to a sensational close at the Maroochydore Mutlisport Complex on the Sunshine Coast.
More than 12,000 students from 608 teams have competed in the 2021 Cup, which began in March. Now 27 teams remain all vying for the title, from Toowoomba East State School, to Cairns’ St Augustine’s College to Palm Beach Currumbin State High School.
Introduced in 2016, the Cup is AFL Queensland’s premier schools’ competition. The state-wide, interschool competition for boys and girls runs across three divisions; Primary, Junior (Years 7 – 9) and Senior (Years 10 – 12).
Friday will see preliminary games contested before primary grand finals are played on Saturday, and secondary grand finals are played on Sunday.
A junior male inclusion fixture between Nambour Special School and Currimundi Special School will also be played on Friday, before Saturday plays host to an exhibition game of senior inclusion football which will showcase the best players in Southeast Queensland.
Damien Mitchelmore, Queensland Program and Participation Manager – Schools and Diversity said three action packed days of football were guaranteed.
“We’ve hosted AFLQ Schools Cup games from Byron Bay to Cairns since March, including the recent North Queensland Championships in Townsville and now it all comes down to this weekend,” he said.
“I’d like to thank the Sunshine Coast Council for their support in sponsoring the Maroochydore State Finals as well as give a huge shout out to our principal partner of the 2021 AFLQ Schools Cup; Streetsmarts.
“The 2021 competition has been it’s biggest year yet and I congratulate every participant and competing school for taking part.
“Good luck to all of our remaining schools this weekend and may the best teams win!”
The StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup has a proud history of nurturing and developing some of the state’s best talent including past AFLQ Schools Cup students and now Gold Coast SUNS products Maddison and Tegan Levi, Serene Watson, Connor Budarick, and Alex Davies, along with Brisbane Lions AFLW Premiership player Belle Dawes.
The state finals will be live streamed on the Courier Mail website across the three days.
