Pre-Season Wrap: Week 1

Week one of the Alpha Sport Pre-Season Cup is done and dusted.

Thirty-two teams have now become 16, as each of today’s winners will next week play off for a spot in the grand final.

Here are the talking points to come out of today, and the scores from each game.

New reign

Out of the four reigning pre-season premiers from last year, it was only Mayne who advanced today. Morningside were beaten by Mt Gravatt, Bond University by Kenmore, and Yeronga by Aspley. Looks like there will be at least three new champions in a few weeks time.

Two champions, two new coaches

When QFA premiers of 2015 Springwood and Mayne ran out today for the first time since winning their respective flags, there was one noticeable difference, the blokes calling the shots. Both teams had new coaches, with Adrian Wallin at Springwood, and Clint Brunnenmeyer and Danny Craven leading the way at Mayne.
WOW

Rhys Estall was rolling around with some bright wheels today, and they must have worked. He booted six goals in Mt Gravatt’s win over Morningside.

The numbers game

With extra playing numbers, new faces, and number requests, settling on a playing jumper is always a difficult task, but Yeronga took that to a whole new level today. They played the guernsey equivalent of musical chairs before their game against Aspley, as each player traded tops to see which fit the best.

Brotherly love

The Nash brothers, Alastair (Morningside) and Dom (Mt Gravatt) got their first opportunity to line up on one another today, and it didn’t take long for them to find each other. About four minutes into the game, they went toe-to-toe under a high ball on the wing. Lets call this one a dead heat.
