The AFL acknowledges the importance of sports trainers to the game of Australian Football.
In 2012 the Sports Trainers in Community Football Policy was released in which minimum competencies required for trainers to officiate at games and training was outlined.
From this document the Emergency Response coordinator (ERC), a three hour training course, was recognised as the minimum qualification required for trainers to hold for match day duties.
The Level 1 Sports Trainer’s qualification (a one or two day training course depending on the delivery: complete face to face or some prior on line component) remains the recommended qualification for all trainers working at senior games.
All topics covered in the ERC course are included in this level 1 course, therefore a qualified level 1 sports trainer has already met the AFL’s minimum requirements.
Prior to undertaking the ERC or level1sports trainer’s courses, participants are required to have already completed a recognised first aid course (HLTAID003) This first aid qualification needs to be reaccredited each year.
In an effort to increase the number of qualified trainers available to the game the AFL has accredited training providers to deliver ERC courses throughout Australia.
We would encourage all leagues to continue to promote the training of Sports trainers (Level 1 or ERC), through AFL accredited providers in their regions.

Owing to the current trend of trainers being far more transient than in the past the need to continue to provide options to train trainers is critical if the industry is to have enough qualified staff in the future.
The ultimate aim is to provide the safest environment for all players to continue participating in our great game.
