AFL Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council today announced a major partnership which will see the Sunshine Coast host the AFL Queensland State Talent Championships, AFL Queensland Schools Cup State Finals and AFL Queensland State Conference until 2021.
Dean Warren, AFL Queensland CEO, praised the support of Sunshine Coast Council in promoting AFL in the region.
“Sunshine Coast Council have been a long-time supporter of AFL in Queensland,” Mr Warren said.
“With the support of Sunshine Coast Council we are pleased to be able to host our emerging AFL talent in first class facilities on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.
“Our AFL Queensland purpose is to ensure AFL is the most progressive and accessible team sport in Queensland.
“Our partnership with Sunshine Coast Council will allow us to meet this purpose and deliver exceptional experiences for all those who are participating and attending our Queensland State Talent Championships, AFL Queensland Schools Cup State Finals and our AFL Queensland State Conference over the next three years.
“During the course of these major events we expect over 2000 people, including players and their families, along with AFL Queensland staff to travel to the Sunshine Coast, providing a great boost to the local economy.”
Sunshine Coast Cr Jason O’Pray, Portfolio Councillor for Tourism, Events and Sport said the council was looking forward to a long term involvement with AFL Queensland.
“AFL is very prominent in the lives of Australians, and Council appreciates the AFL’s acknowledgement and commitment to our region from the staging of junior footy events to the sanctioning of pre-season training camps for the elite AFL teams,” Cr O’Pray said.
“Our association with AFL QLD has been very beneficial and we look forward to a longer term involvement.”
Queensland State Talent Academy Championships
Over the course of the carnival over 600 players, as well as talented young umpires from throughout Queensland and PNG, will compete in a celebration and display of future talent.
These players are progressing through the Queensland pathway towards future careers in AFL, AFLW and our state and community senior leagues.
These championships are the first steps in a junior player’s football development, preparing them for the next stage of their journey in Queensland’s Talented Player Pathway.
2019 sees the Papua New Guinea Under-14 team return to the championships with nine other teams. The Girls Under-17 will increase to ten teams and the Girls Under-14 competition will remain at ten teams.

AFL Queensland Schools Cup
Introduced in 2016, the AFL Queensland Schools Cup is AFL Queensland’s premier schools’ competition. The state-wide, interschool competition for boys and girls runs across three divisions; Primary, Junior (Years 7 – 9) and Senior (Years 10 – 12).
Over 600 teams have already nominated for this years competition, with participation already breaking past records.
