Queensland, The Home of AFL this Winter

AFL Queensland is delighted to welcome six AFL teams from Victoria as the competition establishes a hub in the Sunshine State.

St Kilda, North Melbourne, Essendon, Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Carlton will relocate from Melbourne for at least the next block of fixtures. Five teams will be based on the Gold Coast, and one on the Sunshine Coast.

They join the WA and SA teams already in Queensland, and our Gold Coast SUNS and Brisbane Lions, making Queensland “the home of the AFL” for the next six weeks.

Teams will reap the benefits of fantastic facilities, wonderful weather and an enthusiastic welcome from thousands of AFL fans across the State.

AFL continues to grow in popularity in Queensland, with a record number of kids registering to play AFL this year. In South-East Queensland alone, over 12,000 junior participants will be pulling on their boots when the season kicks off this weekend.

AFL Queensland CEO, Dean Warren is thrilled to play host to more of the elite teams. “For Queensland to have the best of the best in our State for this duration is a real positive for our game. Kids will have the opportunity to see their heroes in action more often, and with crowds returning to the game, it is a good news story for Queensland,” Warren said.

“Our focus is on ensuring we provide the best possible support for these teams and play our part in ensuring the season is a great success for all involved,” he said.
