Thuringowa also started with a win over Hermit Park in the Reserves competition while Northern Beaches held on for a nine-point win over the Hawks.

In the Women’s comp, Northern Beaches and Hermit Park posted convincing wins over University and Thuringowa respectively.

The Curra Swans will start their 2023 campaign in all grades this weekend against the Hawks.

AFL Townsville Competition Manager Dan Watts said he was looking forward to seeing how the teams shaped up as they continued to build throughout the year.

“It’s going to be an exciting season with new coaching panels and recruits, including our developing juniors who are playing senior football for the first time,” he said.

This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the annual ANZAC Day clash between Hermit Park Tigers and Curra Swans.

“This has become a marquee event on the AFL Townsville calendar which the local community has really gotten behind,” Watts said.

“The players look forward to playing in this proud game each year and they definitely put on a show.”
