AFL Queensland and Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) are proud to announced that an AFL competition has been approved by the AIC Heads of Colleges as an endorsed sport for Year 5 and Year 6 in 2017.
The competition will be played in term 1 with 4 divisions; Year 5 As and Bs and Year 6 As and Bs.
The competition will be played on Saturday mornings with all games at AFL Queensland’s Training and Administration Centre situated at Yeronga Football Club.
Villanova, Iona College, Padua, Marist Brothers Ashgrove and St. Laurence’s will all participant in the inaugural year.
AFL Queensland State Development Manager, Mark Ensor said the competition heralded a new era in interschool sport.
“AIC is the largest boys school sports association in Queensland and AFL Queensland are proud to be part of their interschool sport offerings,” said Mr Ensor.
“As part of the next growth phase for Australian Football, we are looking to further evolve our school competitions to ensure there are development opportunities and participation opportunities available to all Queensland school students.”
“We have worked very closely with the AIC Director of Sport’s Committee to ensure that the competition reflects the AIC’s standards and is exciting and entertaining for all participants and their families.”
AIC Executive Officer Kerri Stariha said AIC was delighted to offer AFL to their primary students.
“Both the AIC and AFL share a similar philosophy which is to promote and conduct inter-school activity, with a view to fostering a spirit of fellowship,” said Ms Stariha.
“AFL Queensland have provided significant resources, professional development for our staff and fantastic opportunities for our students.”
