Falcon’s flock to celebrate 20 years

The Kedron-Wavell services club was temporarily re-decorated green and white on Saturday night, August 25th as the Ferny Grove Falcons gathered to celebrate 20 years as a Junior Australian Rules Football Club.

Around 80 players and parents, past and present, as well as sponsors, Life Members, former Presidents and other dignitaries turned up at the Gala Dinner to mark the historic milestone. Other guests included Club Patron, former State MP Geoff Wilson as well as current Ferny Grove MP Dale Shuttleworth.

After a welcome by Club President Greg Paterson, guests enjoyed a 20 minute video documentary entitled “IN FULL FLIGHT: 20 years of the Ferny Grove Falcons,” detailing the history of the club.

Following an initial meeting in November 1991 to gauge interest in forming a local footy club, the Falcons fielded just one under 11 side in 1992.

Over the next few years, the fledging club moved from Ferny Grove State High School to Ferny Grove Primary before finally settling at its current home at Falcon Park on Tramway Street.

Today the Ferny Grove Falcons is a thriving junior club with over 200 members aged six to sixteen.

“For a club to grow from such humble beginnings to what it is today is a fantastic achievement – it was great to see so many familiar faces turn out to celebrate it,” said Paterson.

“And with our junior numbers so strong, there’ll be plenty more to celebrate over the next 20 years.”

The Club also took the opportunity on the night to welcome its newest Life Member, outgoing Secretary and Jack-of-all-trades Kevin Lingard.

“Rarely a day goes by when Kev isn’t up at Falcon Park helping out in one way or another,” said Paterson.

“We’d like to thank him and everyone else who has contributed to the club’s success over the last two decades.”
