North Queensland contributed 172 of the 600 teams competing in this years competition, with past participation records broken across the state.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor, Greg Williamson, was excited to welcome the north’s future stars to Mackay.

“Our region is gaining a reputation as a regional hub for AFL,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Not only have we secured a string of first-class AFLW games, including the Winter Series showdown between the Gold Coast SUNS and Brisbane Lions, now we have some of the north’s future stars converging on Harrup Park.

“It’s also fantastic to see that AFL Queensland are delivering a truly equitable competition for both boys and girls, with equal opportunity for development for all school participants.

“AFL is without doubt at the forefront of the sporting world when it comes to equality.  They are also doing a sensational job of making the influential role models in the AFL and AFLW available to regional areas to both promote the game and inspire young players,” Mayor Williamson added.

“Competitions like this provide amazing development opportunities for aspiring young athletes, both local and intrastate.”

AFL Queensland Regional Manager- Mackay, Dan Cordwell, was looking forward to seeing local Mackay talent come up against their regional rivals.

“It’s fantastic for Mackay to host the North Queensland School Cup Finals,” Cordwell said.

“It is always great for our local kids to get the opportunity to play against our rival regions in Cairns, Capricornia and Townsville.

“To play on a first class venue in Harrup Park against some quality opposition can only benefit our local talent here in Mackay,” he added.

“We are seeing fantastic growth in our school space and its events like these which only encourage more schools to get involved in our great game.”
