AFL Queensland launches Multicultural Action Plan

AFL Queensland today launched the organisation’s Multicultural Action Plan as part of Queensland Multicultural Month celebrations.

A driving strategy for the AFL Queensland Diversity Board, the purpose of the Multicultural Action Plan is to work with community partners and stakeholders to ensure our game reflects the people of Queensland.

The AFL Queensland Diversity was established in 2016 with the charter to assist in developing our Queensland diversity strategy; with particular focus on recruiting diverse employees, engaging with diverse communities, educating the community about diversity, and promoting our game whilst driving new initiatives to further engage these communities.

AFLQ Diversity Board Chair, Mark Ensor, said a critical role of the Plan is to ensure we are promoting inclusion and diversity in Australian Football.

“Collectively, Queenslanders speak more than 180 overseas languages, hold more than 110 diverse religious beliefs and come from over 220 countries. It is vital that our game is reflective of the society we live in,” said Ensor.

A critical role of AFL Queensland is to promote inclusion and diversity in Australian Football.

The acknowledgment and celebration of Multicultural communities, by continuing to build an understanding and respect for customs, values and traditions through education will play a critical role to ensure an inclusive and safe Australian Football community built on mutual respect.

AFL Queensland CEO, Dean Warren, said that sport is a universal language and a vehicle for spreading the values of inclusion and diversity.

“It is our duty as custodians of our great game of Australian Rules football that we embrace and celebrate diverse cultures and influence social change. Our AFL Queensland Multicultural Action Plan will allow us to acknowledge the contribution of multicultural communities in our game,” said Warren.
