AFL Queensland juniors set to celebrate Ronald McDonald House Charity Round

AFL Queensland is partnering with McDonalds Brisbane for the third annual Ronald McDonald House Charity Round across the South East Queensland Footy4Fun and Youth competition.

The Charity Round will take place over July 30th – August 1st and provides clubs with an opportunity to help fundraise and support the incredible work Ronald McDonald House do to assist families of seriously ill children.

AFL Queensland encourages all clubs to use their creativity and get involved with next weekend’s charity round to raise much needed funds for the Ronald McDonald House.

One family who know all too well the importance of the Ronald McDonald House is the Egan’s.

Tayla Egan was your average 14-year-old, she loved playing footy with the Victoria Point Sharks, spending time with friends and going to school.

Shortly after the 2017 season finished, Tayla contracted Influenza A which rapidly turned into the life-threatening Sepsis disease.

After nine weeks in the ICU and fifty surgeries doctors told her parents Paul and Jo, to take her home and prepare for the worst.

“The old footy mindset kicked in and we told Tayla she was brought home to get better,” says Paul.

“Three days, turned into three weeks and slowly her body functions began improving.”

In 2018, Tayla had half her left leg amputated and in 2019 the decision was made to have her right foot removed.

“For parents who go through this sort of traumatic journey words can’t describe the importance of having somewhere like Ronald McDonald House.

“I don’t know what we would have done without their support, you talk to other parents in the house, and they all say the same thing.”

What is the Ronald McDonald House Charity Round?

Ronald McDonald House Charities provides essential accommodation and support services to seriously ill children and their families who require treatment at specialist facilities. Across every game from 30 July – 1 August, we encourage clubs to raise money to support families who need to stay close to their seriously ill children while they receive medical care.

What your Club can do to be involved

  1. SIGN UP your club or team today!  Our goal in 2021 is to raise $15,000! We encourage clubs to use their creativity and get involved with the initiative to fundraise for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Clubs can sign up as teams, individually or as the club to raise money for RMHC. Teams can share their individual donation page to members and navigate onto leader boards while we keep track of our goal.
  2. Pull up the silly socks! Ditch the club colours for the weekend and pull up the red & white silly socks. Contact Ellie Doyle (ellie.doyle@rmhc.org.au) from RMHC SEQ to place your order today.
  3. Shake the buckets! If you would like to raise funds by shaking a donation bucket, please contact Ashleigh McCall(ashleigh.mccall@afl.com.au) to arrange a collection time (one bucket per club).
