UQ Announce Hong Kong Clash

The UQ Red Lions have locked in the ultimate end of season footy trip, with President Ben Coombs announcing a 2018 international double-header following the club’s recent AGM.

‘We’ll be taking a Men’s and Women’s team over to Hong Kong to play an exhibition match against Hong Kong Dragons AFC at Happy Valley racecourse on AFL Grand Final Day,” said Coombs

“This really benefits all our stakeholders; it provides our members with a unique, international experience, increases the exposure of AFL in the Asian region – particularly women’s footy. It will generate more attendees for Hong Kong at their annual Grand Final Event, create additional reach and exposure for sponsors and increase the profile for UQ because we’ll be running clinics at Universities and Schools.’

Justin Barbaro, President of Hong Kong Dragons said the club was thrilled with the announcement.

“Hong Kong Dragons can’t wait to host the UQ Red Lions 2018 tour and it will be great for the game’s development in the region,” said Barbaro.

“The visit presents an exciting opportunity for our existing members, local player development and also women’s footy. We look forward to bringing together what will be an amazing day for all involved.”

The announcement comes off the back of some big recruiting news for the Red Lions, with

Charlie Pershouse joining the club in 2018 to play with brother Jack and join last year’s league leading goal kicker Rhys Tagell.

‘More important to us than playing ability, which is exceptional, is the quality and value these people add to our existing, strong, close group. There’s no ego and they have really bought into what we are building here at UQ,” said Coombs.

In more good news for the club, Brett Hayes returns from Griffith Moorooka as Senior Assistant Coach.

‘This really bolsters and supports our already strong coaching infrastructure with Seb Curtis doing a great job, ably supported by Josh Hanek and Nick Kent coaching the twos,” said Coombs.

“We are currently finalising a Head of High Performance to oversee the program, so stay tuned for more announcements.”
