Youth Girls teams from across the state will battle it out at Leyshon Park, Yeronga as part of the AFL Queensland Under 17’s Youth Girls Championship.
In the 10th running of the event, a record 12 teams will take to the field across the four day championship, split across three divisions.
Division 1 will feature teams from –Brisbane South, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns
Division 2 will feature teams from– Brisbane North, Capricornia, Townsville, and Darling Downs.
Division 3 will feature teams from – Wide Bay, Mackay, Northern Rivers and an Invitational team.
Each team will play one game per day for the first three days against each side in their division, before the cross division games take place on Sunday, as well as the Division 1 Final at 1pm.
After 10 teams competed in two divisions in 2015, this years championships has expanded to include the Northern Rivers and Invitational teams for the first time.
The Invitational Team is comprised of players from each of the South East Queensland regions; Gold Coast, Brisbane South, Brisbane North, and Sunshine Coast.
This group has been identified by their region as the next wave of emerging talent, with their involvement in the Championships in Division 3 a valuable development experience.
The cross division games present teams with the opportunity to see how they stack up against the other division.
AFL Queensland Female High Performance Manager Craig Starcevich said it’s fantastic to see the championships grow with more teams in 2015.
“What’s really good to see, is 12 teams taking part this year. It means that more regions are being represented, and more girls get the opportunity to play,” he said.
Starcevich said that the invitational team is also a great opportunity for the stars of the future to experience the championships.
“The Invitational team was created off the back of the inaugural Under 14 State Championships this year, with some of the players from that doubling up this weekend”’ he said.
“It is a great indication of the depth of talent we have in Queensland at the moment.”
The first game kicks off at 2:00pm on Thursday, when Brisbane South takes on the Sunshine Coast in Division 1.
