Round six of the QAFL produced some impressive results led by Aspley’s impressive win over Maroochydore; the Demons upstaged the Panthers; and Redland Victoria Point spearhead kicking 10 goals in the challenging win over Sherwood.

ASPLEY 18.10.118 defeated MAROOCHYDORE 5.7.37
The Hornets have fired out a warning to the rest of the QAFL competition with an outstanding 81-point win over the Roos on the road.

Maroochydore came into the clash needing a win against a top four side after a spirited outing against Redland Victoria Point in Round 5. By half-time, the result of this clash at home was a formality with the visitors sprinting away to 62-point lead on the back of a seven goal to one second term.

When Aspley kicked the opening goal early in the first half; the margin ballooned out to 68-points and it was simply a matter of respect on the scoreboard for Maroochydore.

Aspley scored 83 points to 12 in the middle quarters to further stamp its authority, not just on the game; but the competition.

Tom Templeton, Connor Stackleberg, Will Peppin and Nick Dodge kicked three goals each for the Hornets while Sam McLachlan kicked two goals for the Roos.

Aspley dominated possession with 372 disposals (+53) and spoils with 17 (+9). The tackle count collectively for both sides produced 116 in a highly intense game.

Aspley went inside 50 on 49 occasions with a scoring rate of 57-percent; and taking marks inside 50 on 33-percent of entries as opposed to 22-percent from Maroochydore.

Coen Harker had an incredible all-round game for the Hornets with 25 touches (9 contested); laid nine tackles and had nine clearances. Josh Govan was the leading disposal winner for Maroochydore with 31 touches (14 contested), along with five centre bounce clearances and six tackles.

REDLAND VICTORIA POINT 19.14.128 defeated SHERWOOD 10.10.70
Ladder leaders Redland Victoria Point took on bottom-placed Sherwood at Powenyenna Oval in what many tipsters predicted to be a pretty straight forward result.

The Pies were determined to write their own script and challenged the undefeated Sharks in the first half like few teams have had this season. They kicked five straight goals on the board to lead the Sharks at quarter-time by three-points and kept the scoreboard pressure on in the second term with seven scoring shots (3.4) while the Sharks added 6.2 from eight scoring shots.

With the margin at 13-points at the main break; Phil Carse and his team were left scratching their heads on how to tackle the young, determined Pies. Their heads were still being scratched inside the opening few minutes after the Pies kicked 1.2 to cut the margin back to just five-points.

Sherwood put up the fight of its life which has often happened against the higher-ranked teams in the past few seasons.

Star forward Matt Hammelmann put his stamp on the game to restore order for the Sharks. After kicking four goals in the first half, Hammelmann sent home six of the last 10 goals for the game (nine to the Sharks) to win by 58-points.

Hammelmann finished the game with 10.3 from 15 kicks in an impressive display that included a game-high seven marks inside the forward 50.

Bruce Reville was outstanding for the Pies with 27 touches that include six clearances, five tackles and six inside 50s; while also finishing with two goals. Pat McCarthy and Sean Ryan kicked seven goals each.

Redland Victoria Point dominated the disposal count with 375 touches (+125) which is standard as arguably the highest possession team in the competition. It just led the tackle count with 50 (+5) but Sherwood had the most spoils with seven.

While Hammelmann had seven marks inside the forward 50, the Sharks managed 12 as a collective, the same total as the Pies. Sherwood scored on 51-percent of inside 50s which is on par with teams that win each week.

There was most certainly much to enjoy from both teams.

LABRADOR 23.11.149 defeated MT GRAVATT 15.11.101
The Southern Tigers took down the Vultures in a contest that did anything but go to script.

Both teams combined for a season-high 38 goals for the contest which is extraordinary considering both teams are not known as heavy scorers.

Labrador averaged seven goals per game (28 in total) in the lead up to the contest and sent home 23 in this game. It’s highest score for the season was 76 points against Maroochydore; it kicked 56 points in the third term and 85 in the second half.

For Mt Gravatt, it had kicked 13, 11 and 13 goals in its opening three games to showcase a greater scoring range; and kicking 15 goals in a game would usually constitute a win.

For the Vultures, Marcus Koo kicked four goals in the ruck (to go with 28 hitouts); and was one of four players to kick two goals or more.

Charlton Offermans had a day out with 37 touches and 14 clearances while Tom Simpson was outstanding with 32 touches and 11 clearances for Labrador while Nathan Wright (five goals), Lachlan Henderson (four goals) and Harry Law (four goals) led the scoring.

Labrador had 56 inside 50s with a scoring efficiency of 61-percent while Mt Gravatt had 44 inside 50s for a scoring efficiency of 59-percent which is 10-percent higher than the best VFL teams.

SURFERS PARADISE 14.12.96 defeated MORNINGSIDE 4.8.32
In perhaps one of the big results of the season; Surfers Paradise took down the previously undefeated Morningside by 62-points.

After kicking four goals in the first quarter; the Panthers kicked just five behinds for the rest of the game in a remarkable 72-point-turn-around after leading by eight-points.

The Demons kicked 7.6 to 0.3 in the middle quarters to lead by six goals heading into the final term to salute victory.

Tom Standish was a stand-out in his first Senior game for the Dees with three goals after kicking eight goals in three Reserves games since crossing from Tweed in the off-season. He finished the game with three marks; all inside 50 to create another valuable option. Matt Doran impressed with 32 touches and six inside 50s for the winners.

Star Panther Keegan Downie went scoreless but Jackson Hille was solid with 24 touches.

Surfers Paradise led the disposal efficiency with 77-percent to 54 and intercept marks with 23 (+11). Morningside applied a tremendous amount of tackles with 55 (+43) and registered 36 inside 50s (-27).

This was a type of result that no-one saw coming.

BROADBEACH 18.9.117 defeated PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN 10.11.71
Broadbeach had to withstand a spirited Palm Beach Currumbin outfit in the first half before pushing to a 46-point win on the road.

The Lions led the Cats by 13-points at the first break before the reigning Grand Finalists slammed home 10.2 in the third term to lead by six-goals and push home to an impressive win.

The third quarter was nothing short of outstanding for Broadbeach with 10 goals eclipsing its best quarter effort for the season; six which it had against Maroochydore and Surfers Paradise (both in the second quarter).

Fletcher Hooker and Jacob Downsend kicked four goals each for the winners while Nick Crowly, AJ Dawson and Cameron Poharama kicked two goals each for the Lions.

Palm Beach Currumbin had just 19 inside 50s but scored 21 times for an efficiency of 110-percent; highlighting that it made the most of second chance opportunities to lock the ball in the attacking 50 and cause a turn-over from a Broadbeach kick out.

Broadbeach had 56 inside 50s which is the second best scoring efficiency of the round with 62-percent.

AJ Dawson was the best player for the Lions with two goals and 32 touches while Lacjlan Huppatz impressed with 26 touches for the Cats that included one goal and five inside 50s.
