Bombers take first Byron 9s

Redland claimed the $8,000 winner’s cheque and the inaugural Byron Bay AFL 9s Invitational title.

The Bombers went through the carnival undefeated, claiming the Men’s Pool A and the grand final, 13.2 80- 7.2 (44).

It was a comfortable win for the team, from Brisbane’s bay side, taking out the decider, 80-44 over experienced 9s campaigners, the Eshay Clan.

The NEAFL side’s skills were a step above the competition and they got off to the perfect start in the grand final, with six unanswered goals.

With a 9.2 (56) – 2.1 (13) half-time lead, the Bombers’ lead was unassailable, despite a second-half fight back from the Eshay Clan.

White Line Fever finished third overall.

The women’s prize went across the border, to Victorious Secret, who cruised to a 95-12 win over the Thunder.

The winners, who claimed a $4,000 prize, were made up of players from the VWFL and didn’t lose a game.

UTS Shamrocks finished up third, with Coops showing plenty of fight throughout the weekend.

The mixed prize stayed at home, after a thrilling grand final, going to the Local Legends.

Made up of players from the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast ,the Local Legends proved they knew the lay of the land, with a 46-40 win over the All State Partners Tigers in the decider.

Twenty-four teams competed in the two-day carnival, the first of its kind in Australia, taking advantage of the sun, surf and laidback vibe of Byron Bay.
