SEQ Community Finals Whip Around

2016 QFA North Seniors

MAROOCHYDORE  v. MAYNE
Mayne 5.8,  6.11,  15.15,  17.17  (119)
Maroochydore 2.1,  4.6,  5.9,  10.15  (75)

What a time to put your best performance of the year in.

Mayne put the Roos to the sword in the first three quarters, dominating the contested stats, choking the Roos in the back half, and preying on the turnovers.

It was an even money game coming in, but the Tigers just firmly reinstated themselves as premiership favorites.

Peaking at the right time of year, and they know how to win them.

CALOUNDRA v. NOOSA
Caloundra 3.2,  6.5,  9.8,  14.11  (95)
Noosa 0.1,  4.7,  10.11,  11.11  (77)

A fast starting Caloundra live to fight another day, after a gutsy win over Noosa.

The Panthers restricted the Tigers to a solitary point in the opening quarter, which really set them up for the rest of the game.

Noosa came back hard in the third-quarter, hitting the lead by nine-points at the final change, but they had spent their petrol tickets.

Caloundra regained control early in the forth, and skipped away to a three goal win.

They will face Maroochydore this week in a prelim.

2016 QFA South Seniors

BOND UNIVERSITY v. KENMORE
Bond University 4.2,  6.5,  10.9,  12.14  (86)
Kenmore 2.2,  3.7,  4.10,  5.12  (42)

From the opening bounce, Bond was on.

They proved too quick and too slick for the Bears, controlling the tempo all day, cruising home to a 44-point victory.

Their three-quarter-time margin allowed them to put the cue in the rack a bit in the last, with an eye on their game against Yeronga this week.

Definitely a smoky to make the Grand Final.

SPRINGWOOD v. YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE
Springwood 2.1,  4.9,  11.11,  14.20  (104)
Yeronga South Brisbane 2.2,  5.5,  11.7,  13.7  (85)

It was as tight as it gets for the majority of the afternoon, but Springwood outlasted a gallant Yeronga.

2016 QAFA (A) Seniors

KEDRON v. PARK RIDGE
Kedron 7.4,  12.8,  18.15,  22.18  (150)
Park Ridge 2.1,  6.3,  7.6,  12.8  (80)

It seems these two teams may not have been playing games in the final home and away round, Kedron were just too good.

Like the week before, the Lions were in complete control from the outset, piling on seven first quarter goals to two.

A six goal to one third quarter put the result beyond doubt, as Kedron ran riot in the middle, and had their forwards, like George Fitzgibbon who finished with eight, hitting the scoreboard.

BEENLEIGH v. PINE RIVERS
Pine Rivers 2.1,  5.2,  7.2,  12.5  (77)
Beenleigh 1.3,  4.4,  7.8,  7.13  (55)

At three quarter time, this was right in the balance.

Six-points in it, both showing signs of tearing it open.

When push came to shove though, it was the Swans who stepped up.

They kicked five last quarter goals, to Beenleigh’s five behinds.

It was a stunning last 20 minutes that should fill them with confidence heading into next week against Park Ridge.

2016 QAFA B Central

JIMBOOMBA v. UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
University of Queensland 11.3  (69)
Jimboomba 8.6  (54)

I don’t think either sides supporters have any fingernails left after this one, neither side were ever comfortable.

The Redbacks have had it their own way in the middle in the previous two weeks, but that was never ever going to happen on Friday night.

UQ weathered the storm in the clinches, and most importantly, took their opportunities going forward.

The scoring shots were dead even for the entire game, so to kick 11.3, under finals pressure, is outstanding, and what probably won the Red Lions the ball game in the end.

Roll on Zillmere in the Grand Final this Friday night.

2016 QAFA Sunshine Coast

POMONA v. MAROOCHYDORE
Maroochydore 3.3,  7.6,  9.6,  11.8  (74)
Pomona 1.0,  2.1,  7.5,  8.7  (55)

Probably to the surprise of a few, Maroochydore are the 2016 QAFA (B) Sunshine Coast premiers, and they did it with a stunning second quarter.

They turned it on in the middle, got their forwards into the game, and moved the ball quickly.

Pomona came back at them, especially in the third, but the Roos held their nerve late to kick a couple of clutch goals in the dying minutes to close out the game.

2016 QAFA Northern Rivers

BALLINA BOMBERS v. TWEED COAST TIGERS
Ballina Bombers 2.2,  3.4,  9.7,  13.12  (90)
Tweed Coast Tigers 3.3,  7.3,  8.5,  9.6  (60)

They left their run until late, but Ballina have stormed into the Northern Rivers Grand Final.

They got there thanks to a barnstorming second half, where they kicked 10 goals to Tweed’s two.

Early on, it was all Tigers, who went into the sheds at half time 23-point ups, but like a good side, Ballina never threw the towel in.

They came out with a point to prove in the second half, and starting winning the footy in the middle.

Now, they have a date with destiny this Saturday against Byron.

2016 QWAFA

YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE WFC v. ASPLEY HORNETS WFC
Yeronga South Brisbane WFC 3.4,  6.10,  10.11,  16.17  (113)
Aspley Hornets WFC 1.3,  1.3,  2.5,  2.5  (17)

Yeronga were simply too good in this.

Aspley started reasonably well, containing the Devils run, but the damn walls burst after quarter time.

Collins kicked six, which was outstanding, and Grundon won a heap of the footy.

They are in very good form, and are very dangerous.

COOLANGATTA TWEED WFC v. ZILLMERE EAGLES WFC
Coolangatta Tweed WFC 3.1,  11.7,  14.10,  15.12  (102)
Zillmere Eagles WFC 0.2,  1.4,  1.4,  4.4  (28)

By three quarter time, this one was in the books.

Coolangatta were a class above on the Saturday, proven by their eight goals to two second quarter which broke the game open.

Zillmere battled hard all afternoon, and won the last quarter thanks to some nice running and spread, but it was too late, Cooly had done the damage.

That sets the Bluebirds up with a semi final clash against Yeronga this weekend.

2016 Colts Division 1

SOUTHPORT v. BROADBEACH
Southport 2.0,  5.1,  9.4,  13.7  (85)
Broadbeach 2.4,  8.8,  9.10,  10.11  (71)

Broadbeach were gallant, but Southport showed why they are right in the grand final hunt with a come from behind victory on Saturday.

Broadbeach made their move in the second quarter, edging away to a four-goal lead at the half time break.

But Southport refused to stay down, getting back within a kick at the last break, before outgunning the Cats in the last quarter four goals to one.

They way they finished, and the legs they had at the end of the game will fill them with confidence heading into a massive game next week for a spot in the Grand Final.

WESTERN MAGPIES v. ASPLEY
Western Magpies 3.0,  8.4,  9.4,  12.7  (79)
Aspley 1.3,  3.3,  7.4,  9.5  (59)

It wasn’t a day out by any stretch of the imagination, but the Magpies did exactly what they needed to do to win this one.

Apart from Aspley cutting into the margin in the third, they were on top for the day.

It started in the middle, and it continued with the way they used the ball in the forward 50.

After a disappointing first week of finals, it was exactly what they needed.

2016 Colts Division 2

PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN v. BURLEIGH
Palm Beach Currumbin 2.1,  5.4,  6.6,  8.12  (60)
Burleigh 3.3,  3.5,  4.9,  4.10  (34)

Some outstanding defensive pressure by Palm Beach Currumbin has kept them alive for another week.

It wasn’t the highest scoring, most open affair of all time, but that didn’t matter.

To hold Burleigh to 34-points, and four goals, is the effort that wins you games of finals footy.

The Bombers came out of the blocks the best, jumping the Lions, but once Palm Beach shook off the early nerves and settled, they were in control.

NOOSA v. COORPAROO
Noosa 2.4,  5.10,  8.13,  13.17  (95)
Coorparoo 3.2,  8.4,  11.5, 12.7  (79)

It was always going to be close; it was always going to be tight.

At three quarter time though, Noosa had their backs up against the wall.

They showed signs of putting the foot down, but Coorparoo seemed to have the answers.

The last quarter is when the Tigers turned it on.

They kicked the last three of the game, including two to Fowles, to run the Kings off their legs.
